Controlling Time

These works are about time, in small measurable increments and the attempt to replicate, reiterate or recreate a set of actions and also the abilities, limitations and goals of an operator, all core elements of the medium of photography. These are photograms made in a traditional darkroom with typical masking materials (but yes I cut them especially). The operator, ie me, is trying to replicate a series of actions which happen in the dark, a bit like rolling dice or making a drawing with a blindfold on. The effects of all the actions are not apparent until it’s too late to change. The operator has something of a directive to try to replicate the roll of the dice, but can’t help trying to make a better one each time. Replication usually fails and sometimes the whole thing goes downhill. All there is to be done is try again.

All made under the graces of Luxlab and frames at Downing Frames.

This show was originally supposed to open in May. Thank you to everyone who helped keep things going.

Also thank you to Matthew Dipple for referring to these as the squiggle and the finger/worm.

Also thank you to Tavares Strachan, I think I’m just still chewing on your undergrad projects
